As we come to the end of 2013, I have decided to paint an image of Mr. Spock, a beloved iconic character from Star Trek. He is, of course, famously known for saying: “Live Long and Prosper”. Have a happy new and prosperous year !

We’ve been having record-setting dry conditions in California (since records started being kept back in 1849)…. we need rain! Perhaps this situation contributed to my creating this painting where I created a composite involving a pre-Columbian rain deity (Chaac, for the Maya, Tlaloc for the Mexica) that was associated with abundance, storms, lightning bolts, and the symbol/logo of DC Comics’ superhero Shazam (the yellow lightning bolt) emblazoned on his eye-popping, overly-saturated red shirt.

This painting was created in Oakland and while I was a student at California State University, East Bay (Hayward)… I began by creating a ceramic relief owl motif and worked around it…. below the owl, for instance, there is a pool of forms that represent excrement (crap!!!)… it was a sort of statement about societal bullshit and the sort of spiritual healing and wisdom that needs to occur. Behind the foreground, there is a nightmarish scene of foreboding hills and, at the top of the composition, hooks and bodies…..    enjoy
